1. Are you tired of purchasing overpriced skin care products with too many ingredients that you can't pronounce? The face mask that you purchased from the drug store may be convenient but it was probably made in a factory under unknown conditions over a year ago. You can start your own natural skin care regimen with inexpensive products that are natural and excellent for your skin. A homemade mask takes only a few minutes to put together and once you have the basic ingredients ready in a jar or carton, you can have your own instant face mask made specifically for your particular skin requirements. If you are ready to start making your own facial mask, this blog is for you.

This is a recipe for a purifying, toning, soothing and rejuvenating mask. First, let's just make the basic mask recipe so you can have it on hand. Since we often have areas of dry skin, oily skin and normal skin, you can use this basic mask recipe with several different facial formulas. We will be using green clay which you can purchase at your local drugstore or health food store. The recipe calls for 2 ounces of green clay and 3 teaspoons of corn flour. Mix the clay and corn flour together in a jar and keep it ready for combining into one of several different mask formulas that we will describe later. You can also use 1 tablespoon of this basic formula with enough of the other liquids needed for a particular recipe to form a paste and then add your chosen essential oils when you are ready. For each recipe, you will blend the ingredients together to form a smooth paste and leave it on your skin for fifteen minutes. Rinse it off with warm water and apply a facial treatment oil such as grapeseed or almond oil. Dab the face with a tissue after applying the oil.

  2. I’ve been reading about the benefits of essentials oils for the skin. I’ve been having some minor irritations and breakouts these past few weeks and I’m looking for new ways to control these or to rid myself of these altogether. My doctor says it’s because of stress or a result of a poor diet. I suppose I can eat healthier but I think there is little I can do about the everyday stress that I feel. That’s why I’ve been looking for additional supplements that could help me.

I learned that I cannot apply essential oils directly into my skin. Because of its concentrated nature, essential oils can often cause severe irritation or allergic reactions if applied directly. Carrier oils are usually needed to mix with the essential oil to dilute it before application. It’s a good thing that I read this before I was going to actually use the essential oils otherwise my skin would have looked worse. Now I have to find the right kind of carrier oil to mix with the essential oil to get the outcome that I want.

  3. Once we get older, many of us have problems with bad circulation in the hands and feet. To treat poor circulation, add 30 drops of geranium essential oil to two tablespoons of sweet almond or grapeseed carrier oil. Rub this combination on yourself from the hand to the elbow to aid circulation in your hands and from the foot to the knee to treat your feet and lower extremities.

Geranium is one of the best revitalizing oils there is so you can rub the above mixture all over your body. When you put it on your face you will improve the texture of your skin and make it firmer and smoother. Besides making you look younger, geranium is a very effective antidepressant so it will also cheer you up and make you feel great. Geranium smells very nice too!

  4. Rheumatoid arthritis, a chronic inflammation of the joints, can occur at any age. It affects connective tissues and may be brought on when the autoimmune system turns on itself and then attacks healthy cells. When this happens, joints can become useless and muscle starts wasting away. Symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis include acute or chronic pain, headaches, and tender swollen lymph nodes.

Nutrition is important in the treatment of arthritis. Limit or cut out completely dairy and wheat products, red meat, salt, sugar, acidic fruits, and soft drinks. Eat vegetarian foods, white fish and poultry, plus lots of salads with raw vegetables and any form of cooked or uncooked cabbage. Drink lots of water and add carrot juice to your diet. Increase your vitami,mn and mineral supplements; especially take calcium, zinc, and vitamins C, B, and D.

Use any of these essential oils in your bath and massage oil: eucalyptus, peppermint, chamomile, geranium, rosemary, lemon, thyme, and lavender. Before beginning your essential oil bath or massage therapy, you must draw the toxins out of your body with a clay poultice. Make the clay poultice from green clay which you can get from any health food store. Make a stiff paste by adding water to 1 tablespoon to dry clay. Then add 2 drops eucalyptus, 1 drop peppermint, 3 drops chamomile, and 1 drop lavender essential oils to the clay paste and mix well. Smear the paste over the sore joints and painful areas and cover with muslin (which you can buy by the yard) and rest for at least 15 minutes; longer if possible. Follow this course of action twice a day.

  5. Arthritis is a chronic inflammation of the joints and if you have any form of this disease, you will want to read this blog. Today I'm going to discuss aromatherapy and essential oils for rheumatoid arthritis.

  6. Rosemary essential oil is a great one to use during your morning shower because it is a mental and physical stimulant and also during a relaxing bath after a long strenuous day because it is an excellent treatment for all muscular conditions. Rosemary has antiseptic properties and is often used to treat muscular sprains, rheumatism, arthritis, depression, fatigue, memory loss, migraine headaches, coughs, flu, and diabetes. It is also used in beauty treatments, hair care products, and acne preparations.

If you are one of those unfortunate people who has a case of continuous muscle fatigue or myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME), you may be helped by using this muscle fatigue formula: 5 drops of thyme essential oil, 10 drops rosemary, 5 drops cypress, 10 drops eucalyptus/peppermint essential oil, diluted in 2 tablespoons of grapeseed oil. You can use any other carrier oil but grapeseed oil is very light to the touch.

It is important that ME sufferers get enough sleep but many times, because of their aching muscles, they have insomnia so they are extremely tired and yet they can't sleep. The essential oils to use for insomnia are valerian, marjoram, chamomile, clary-sage, sandalwood, and lemon. Massage any of these oils into your body before having an oil bath. Use any of the above mentioned oils in a blend of a total of 30 drops to 2 tablespoons of carrier oil. Massage this over your whole body while you run a warm bath. Then put 4 drops of any essential oil from the list into the bath and swish it around before getting in. Rest in the water or read a book until the water starts to cool and then go to bed. Do this nightly to help with your insomnia.

  7. We are continuing to discuss "aromassage" as a valuable method of using essential oils as part of the healing process when using aromatherapy. In previous blogs we have discussed which essential oils to use for sore or fatigued muscles (See Essential Oil Muscle Relief). You can always look at the archived blogs if you have any questions. Now let's look at what kind of aromassage to use for different parts of the body.

    • Shoulders - aromassage into the shoulder muscles with both effleurage and petrissage movements. Make firm strokes from the shoulder to the neck and back again using thumbs and palms.
    • Arms - aromassage up towards the armpit, using effleurage or petrissage on the fatty or muscular areas only.
    • Back - Use firm or gentle effleurage or petrissage but do not massage over the vertebrae. Start from the lower part of the back and with both hands stroke all the way to the shoulders. Slide your hands over the shoulders and then return down the sides of the back. Repeat these strokes as many times as you like, the longer you aromassage, the more relaxing it is.
    • Abdomen - only use circular movements on the abdomen and move in a clockwise direction. Effleurage is the best method to use on the abdomen.
    • Legs - use effleurage to aromassage the legs and always move upwards. You can use petrissage on the fatty or muscular areas only but not over varicosed areas.
    • Women's reproductive problems- aromassage using effleurage movements beginning at the lower back and sliding over the hips. Then slide each hand over the abdomen separately and repeat the whole process.
    • Feet - aromasssage from the toes to the heel with the thumbs under the foot and the fingers on top.

All massage should flow as the blood does, toward the heart. After an aerobic workout, aroma massage is useful to release toxins and keep your muscles supple.

  8. Aromatherapy massage or aromassage is an excellent way to apply essential oils as part of an alternative healing process. It is not hard to do and anyone can do it to family, friends, even to yourself. There are many different ways to apply aromassage:

    • Effleurage - this is a series of gentle, soothing strokes which allow essential oils to penetrate your body and help you to relax and become calm. For this method, use your whole hands in  either long or short strokes that can be either firm or gentle.
    • Petrissage - is similar to gently kneading dough. Use the palm, finger tips and thumbs to slowly and gently knead the body. Petrissage is most helpful when used on fatty areas and on backs.
    • Head massage - put the essential oils  on your fingertips to massage the scalp. Work the fingers all over the scalp.
    • For migraine and headaches - massage around the base of the neck and work your way up to the base of the scalp. Massage in this manner for a few moments with firm effleurage strokes.
    • For the neck - massage the neck using small, firm circular movements from the base of the neck, up either side of the vertebrae to the base of the scalp. Massage the sides of the neck and repeat these movements in a more gentle fashion and work your way down the neck. Repeat several times using appropriate essential oils.

We will continue this blog with more areas for you to massage.

  9. I learned this rhyme when I was little and it stuck, "Beans, beans, the tropical fruit. The more you eat, the more you poot!" It's true that the foods you eat can lead to organic stomach gases but it can also be associated with a disease like gallstones or  some problem with the gallbladder. Then too, it could be that you're swallowing air during the day and the gas could be functional with no disease present at all.

To cure functional flatulence simply change your eating habits and be aware of swallowing air during the day. Belching does not help this problem, it causes you to swallow even more air.  If you cut down on cellulose and starchy foods like potatoes, wheat, peas, and onions you will cut out a lot of your gas problem. After eating, sip on a glass of hot water to which you've added a pinch of bicarbonate of soda and 1 drop of  peppermint  essential oil. This helps not only your stomach, but also the intestinal tract.

If your gas is giving you pain, make a massage oil blend of 1 teaspoon of carrier oil (sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, or shea oil) plus 2 drops cardamom essential oil and 3 drops of peppermint essential oil. Rub this mixture over your whole abdomen in a clockwise direction. Relief is on the way!

  10. A lot of people don’t know the difference between ‘healthy’ skin and ‘unhealthy’ skin. There are actually a number of glaring signifiers to determine whether or not your skin can be considered healthy. There are typically four criteria to look at in regards to healthy skin: hydration, even color, smooth texture, and normal sensations.

Hydration is in reference to whether or not skin is frequently overly dry or flaky; even color is referring to whether or not skin looks blotchy; smooth texture relates to acne, blackheads, scars, and wrinkles; lastly, normal sensations is referring to whether or not you may feel burning or itching on your skin. One of the best ways to ensure that your skin remains healthy is through organic body care.

  11. I talk to a friend of mine over the phone fairly often and the last couple of times we talked, I could tell she has a terrible summer cold. I told her a little about essential oils and how they can help her get over that cold. Don't you hate it when you get a cold in the summer? Almost every time I travel by airplane I get a cold from being cooped up with strangers all breathing the same air that is circulated over and over! It's no wonder that my husband ended up with a terrible summer cold when we returned from a family reunion in Washington, DC recently (see my husband standing in front of the White House?)

My husband dislikes being sick too so I wanted to help him get over his cold as quickly as possible. I had him drink a cup of my summer cold tea which is hot water with honey and lemon plus one drop each of any two of the following essential oils: eucalyptus, ginger, lavender, tea tree or oregano. All of these essential oils have either antiviral or antibacterial properties and will help you get quick relief for a summer or winter cold. Just drink a cup every four hours until you start to feel better.

  12. I don't ever have a problem going to sleep. As soon as my head hits the pillow, my husband says I am out like a light. Unfortunately for him, he often can't go right to sleep and he lays there and tosses and turns (no, that doesn't wake me up but he tells me about it.) He uses a couple of different aromatherapy methods to get to sleep now.

Dilute the following essential oils into 2 tablespoons of sweet almond oil and massage the blend into your body. For an individual massage, you only need to use a teaspoon  of this mixture.

    • 10 drops chamomile
    • 10 drops lemon
    • 10 drops marjoram

After massaging this blend into your skin, take an essential oil bath. Put 4 drops of any of the following oils (or a blend of any of them) into your bath water: marjoram, chamomile, clary-sage, sandalwood or lemon. Your bath water should be warm, not too hot or too cool. Get in the bath and just relax or read a book - not an action or horror story though. Then go to bed. You can repeat this every night or as needed.

  13. Have you ever awakened to a sore neck that you did not have before you went to sleep? I figured out over the years that, at least for me, this is caused by sleeping in the wrong position on my pillow. It's too bad that the problem doesn't go away as quickly as it occurs. It usually lasts two to three days for me and that is an uncomfortable feeling. I have a remedy for neck strain if it happens to you too.

First, prepare your ice massage tools by freezing several Styrofoam cups filled with water and then cut the cup down so there is about 2 inches of ice protruding. Massage in a circular pattern over the sore area. You can also use an ice pack around the sore area for at least 15 minutes at a time. Then you can massage the neck and  shoulder area three times a day using the following blend diluted in 2 tablespoons of liquid shea oil:

    • 10 drops ginger
    • 10 drops rosemary
    • 5 drops black pepper
    • 5 drops peppermint
  14. Aromatherapy is a form of alternative medicine that has helped many practitioners to relax and obtain a sense of profound calmness. In today's hustle-and-bustle business world, it's nice to have a natural and pleasant retreat. For many people, that means inhaling the soothing or invigorating scent of essential oils. These oils affect much more than just the nose and the body's olfactory senses. They travel to the limbic system to enhance your mood too. Whether you want a pick me up or something to calm your nerves, there is an essential oil to fulfill your needs.

Aromatherapy essential oils are derived by extracting and boiling down the essence of beneficial plants. Each essential oil can be used for many diverse purposes. These oils can be used to do everything from relieving sleep disorders or calming a bad cough to improving a  person's overall outlook on life.  If you are overworked and stressed out, take a moment to pamper yourself with some much needed aromatherapy. Keep reading this blog to find out more ways to use essential oils in your life.

  16. Anyone who wants to use natural products for alternative health care should know a few basic oils with which to begin their aromatherapy pharmacy. The therapeutic grade essential oils I suggest to begin with are lavender, tea tree, peppermint, chamomile, eucalyptus, geranium, rosemary, thyme, lemon, and clove. These essential oils are chosen for their medical properties first and second for their ability to take care of a broad range of health problems. In the next few blogs, we will discuss uses for each of these oils.

The first essential oil I recommend for your aromatherapy pharmacy is lavender. It is the most basic oil to have in your home because it is extremely effective in treating burns and scalds. In both cases, it can be put directly on the affected area right away. Lavender’s properties of antiseptic, antibiotic, antidepressant, detoxifier and sedative allow healing to occur more quickly and prevent scarring. It also accelerates the immune system and speeds the healing process because it stimulates the wound’s cells to rejuvenate more quickly. The next time you burn yourself in the kitchen, put a drop or two of lavender on it two to four times a day until it is healed.

  17. Newborn babies respond well to touch and since it is an important part of the parent child bonding custom, parents should start using massage right away. Commercial baby oils usually have a petroleum or mineral oil base which is good for protecting baby’s skin from water and urine but not necessarily good for baby’s skin. I suggest using a formula which consists of carrier oils that are good for skin as well as essential oils that are good for the skin and have other benefits too.

The following formula uses 1/10th of the essential oil in an adult massage oil but it is still an excellent treatment for eczema and cradle cap, inflammation and teething problems and it acts as a general strengthener. It also boosts the immune system and has a wonderful calming effect  on the nervous system. The loving touch of mommy or daddy’s massage all over his or her body, avoiding only the genitals and the eyes, will keep baby contented.

    Baby’s Massage Oil Formula

    • Chamomile – 1 drop
    • Lavender – 1 drop
    • Geranium – 1 drop
Dilute in 2 tablespoons sweet almond oil

This massage oil can be used daily on your two to twelve month old baby.

  18. With the advances in modern medicine and knowledge about the human anatomy, several companies have developed products that reduce the impact of the aging process.  Here are a few practices to keep you looking and feeling younger.

~Exercise regularly; this not only tones your body and makes you more physically fit, but improves blood flow and makes your heart and lungs stronger.

~Eat healthy; less red meat in your diet and more vegetables over time can make a huge impact in the aging process.

~Take vitamins; we often don’t receive our necessary daily vitamin values from eating normal foods, and a simple once a day vitamin will really make a long term difference.

~Anti-Aging Skincare; there are a number of anti-aging skin care products designed to keep your skin more firm and nourish it as well, this will keep you looking younger and take care of your skin as well.
